The Gangabal Lakes Trek expedition is the best alternative trek to the famous Great Lakes and it remains open most of the year. The trek starts at Chattergul village. It passes through pine forests, and meadows and reaches its destination at the twin alpine lakes Gangabal and Nundkol situated at the foothills of Mount Haramukh (5300M). The return route is through Trunkhol. The trek concludes at Naranag village and temple.
The first hike is a steep climb through the pine forest of then a gradual walk through meadows all collide to create a challenging trek in one of the most beautiful and serene Himalayas of Kashmir. It becomes a snow trek in April-May and October-November and presents a unique view of the Himalayas.

- Travel: 2-hour drive from Srinagar to Naranag.
- Trek distance: 10-12 km (5-6 hours).
- Altitude: Start at Naranag (2,128m), and reach Trunkhol (3,200m).
- After an early breakfast in Srinagar, drive to the historic village of Naranag.
- Begin the trek with a steady ascent through forests of pine and birch.
- Reach Trunkhol Meadow, where you’ll set up camp for the night. The meadow offers beautiful views of Mount Harmukh.
- Trek distance: 8-10 km (4-5 hours).
- After breakfast, continue the trek toward Gangbal Lake, following a rocky trail that opens up to panoramic views.
- After reaching Gangbal, take some time to explore the serene Nundkol Lake, which is just a short distance away.
- Spend the night camping by the lakeside, surrounded by the peaceful atmosphere of the Himalayas.
- Trek distance: 18 km (6-8 hours).
- Begin the descent early in the morning, retracing your steps through the meadows and forests back to Naranag.
- Once at Naranag, you’ll be driven back to Srinagar, arriving by evening.
